WWE Hall of Famer Tommy Dreamer has explained why he believes Gunther is the perfect next rival for CM Punk.
CM Punk is currently set to defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Bron Breakker on the January 5 edition of WWE RAW. However, fans are already buzzing about what could come after that match.
On a recent episode of RAW, Punk came face-to-face with Gunther. Gunther delivered a heated promo where he once again insulted John Cena, drawing loud boos from the crowd. Punk then made his entrance, and the two stood nose-to-nose before Gunther exited the ring, mocking Cena with the “You Can’t See Me” taunt.
Following that tense moment, Tommy Dreamer shared his thoughts on why Gunther is exactly the kind of opponent Punk needs. Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Dreamer said every wrestler in WWE should be aiming for the top.
“Everyone in WWE should want to be world champion. Whether you’re looking at the Cody Rhodes side, everybody in WWE should want to be the world champion,” Dreammer said. “I’m talking about Monday Night Raw, so I’m talking about the world champion in CM Punk. CM Punk, like we said, needs that adversary. CM Punk needs that guy.”
“And for everybody and I’m not saying your opinion is wrong but how I looked at the whole Gunther, John Cena thing, I looked at it many, many different ways.” He then broke down why Gunther fits that role perfectly, especially after everything that happened with John Cena.
“Here’s my end result: John Cena is no longer, and Gunther is. That’s why I felt it was the perfect call for John Cena to go out the way he did. When you watch now, two weeks in a row, that call is being solidified because Gunther’s getting more and more heat. If we’re teasing a CM Punk–Gunther, what a big road that CM Punk has to go up against.”
