Triple H defends the decision to have John Cena lose his retirement match.
Speaking on the Saturday Night’s Main Event Post-Show, WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque opened up on the decision to book John Cena to tap out to Gunther in his retirement match.
“I’m actually mildly disappointed. I thought it would be so much louder,” Triple H began with addressing the fans chanting “You fuc*ed up.” Turning to the panel, he continued, “Look, there are time-honored traditions in our business, and there are ways that you handle your business.
“John has said the right thing his entire career, that it is about leaving this place better than you found it. I think that there’s no way for people to understand that in the moment. But you do what is right for the business, you do what is right for this industry. John has done that his entire career, and I’m gonna do that my entire career,” Triple H said.
Triple H Will Always Do What’s Best For Business
Speaking further, Triple H noted that he will continue to do what’s best for business. He also put kayfabe aside and said John Cena has done all the right things throughout his career and would want to put someone over on his way out.
“I will do what I believe is right for this business, it’s just what it is, and I understand it’s tough for people to understand. It’s part of what we do. That is the role that we’ve chosen.
“If you were to say, ‘What will Cena do on his way out?’ take the emotion out of it and ask people, ‘What would John Cena do? I’m talking about the character, his entire career, sum that all up, and say, ‘What would he do on the way out? If we want to talk behind the scenes, he will put over somebody on the way out. He will leave this better than he found it. He will go into the ring and make somebody on his way out. That’s what John does; it’s what John has always done,” Triple H said.
