WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry has shared what happened backstage after John Cena wrestled his retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Several WWE legends were in attendance for the historic night, including Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, Trish Stratus, Eve Torres, Kevin Owens, and more. John Cena faced Gunther in the main event and lost after tapping out to a rear naked choke, bringing his legendary in-ring career to an end.
After the match, emotions ran high behind the scenes. Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Mark Henry described a powerful and emotional locker room moment as wrestlers and legends lined up to show their respect.
He said, “I walked through the back… and there was a line of about thirty or forty people to get to John, hugging and consoling him. I mean, people were emotional. It’s been a while since… the last time I seen people crying emotional like that was… somebody passed away.”
Henry made it clear that while Cena is done wrestling, he is far from gone. “John is still alive and well. He’s going to Hollywood… You’re gonna keep hearing him, every day… He’s not going away. He’s just going away from the ring.”
Henry also spoke about the crowd’s reaction toward Gunther. He said, “All I know is this, Dave, they better get the dump button ready for every show because they said ‘f-you, GUNTHER’ throughout the whole match.” [H/T: wrestlingnews.co]
John Cena’s final match clearly left a lasting impact, not just on the fans in attendance but on the entire WWE locker room as well. Many fans did not accept the ending of the match.
Following the match, several WWE stars came to the ring to honor the 17-time world champion. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon led the tribute, but fans inside the arena loudly booed Triple H, showing their frustration with how Cena’s final match was booked.
