CM Punk Shares The Best Advice John Cena Gave Him

CM Punk says John Cena has probably given him advice, including one thing that seems like he’s followed through on.

WWE shared a new video of various WWE Superstars reflecting on the advice they’ve received from John Cena, who will retire from in-ring competition on Saturday night. The video featured names like Cody Rhodes, Becky Lynch and Natalya, as well as CM Punk, with whom Cena has a storied relationship.

Cena has referred to Punk as one of his “wrestling soulmates.” More recently, Cena told Chris Van Vliet that his match against CM Punk in Saudi Arabia was his favorite part of his retirement tour so far. He also admitted the experience made him cry, and called it one of the best moments he has ever been part of.

“That moment with Punk in Saudi. That transcends wrestling,” John Cena told Van Vliet. “To see cultures bridged. To see genuine forgiveness. I’m watching that pre-show bawling. It’s a pre-show. Unfolding before our eyes is accountability and genuine forgiveness and the bridging of cultural gaps. People who might not know a lot about each other or understand each other are getting along in harmony through this one thing that we dig: wrestling.

Speaking to WWE Digital, Punk joked about not listening to Cena’s advice before sharing what he actually learned from one of his biggest rivals.

“I feel like John’s probably given me advice. I’m not the guy that really listens to people though,” Punk said, before giving it a bit more thought.

“[John told me to] ‘Stick to your guns. Be yourself, stay true to yourself.’”
