Chris Jericho resurfaces on WWE’s social media content.
With John Cena just days away from retiring from in-ring competition, WWE and its fans continue to look back on the many memories that precede it. A notable one came in June 2005, when Cena emerged as the overall first pick in the 2005 WWE Draft Lottery.
WWE’s social media team highlighted this “game-changing” moment by sharing a clip of Cena’s draft selection, which was announced by none other than Chris Jericho. Jericho, of course, is a multi-time world champion and former rival of Cena’s in WWE. Currently, though, he is contracted to All Elite Wrestling.
WWE’s inclusion of Jericho in the promotion of Cena’s last match has raised eyebrows amongst fans, especially as Jericho’s contract with AEW is said to be expiring at the end of December. Recent reports indicate that WWE has offered Jericho a retirement storyline of his own in the event that he re-signs with the Stamford-based company upon the turn of the new year. Meanwhile, AEW CEO Tony Khan has expressed interest in retaining Jericho himself, noting that a respective return to AEW would be “exciting.”
As of now, it is unclear as to which direction Jericho will go following the end of his existing AEW deal, though he is confident that fans will find him in a wrestling ring of some sort in 2026.
In the 2005 Draft Lottery, Cena moved from SmackDown to the WWE Raw brand as WWE Champion. Fast forward to 2025, he will leave the ring as a record-breaking 17-time world champion under the WWE banner. In his fifth last match at WWE Crown Jewel, Cena paid homage to Jericho by putting AJ Styles in a Walls of Jericho.
