John Cena Would Rather Leave WWE Now On Top Than Risk Doing Bad Work

John Cena has once again explained why he decided to retire from in-ring competition.

Ahead of his final WWE RAW appearance tonight live from Madison Square Garden, new Intercontinental Champion John Cena appeared on ESPN’s First Take. When Stephen A. Smith asked him how he feels about the current state of WWE now that he’s stepping away from the ring, Cena said there’s never been a better time to be in WWE than now.

Cena also stated the company has the best talent in the industry, and that watching them perform at a high level made him realize that it was time for him to walk away.

“There’s never been a better time to be in the WWE,” John Cena began, “and that’s from its relationships in the lens and its roster on the field. I think we have the most gifted and the biggest batch of gifted personnel in the ring. They’re doing stuff right now I can never possibly think of, which is why it’s time for me to walk away.”

John Cena also stated that he’d rather retire now and leave the audience feeling that he gave his all than stay further and risk doing bad work.

“I still got a little bit left in the tank, as you saw in those highlights. I’m 48, I still look good, I still feel good, I have my health. But I’ve been here for 23 years and operating in a very high capacity, at a very high level, and I really want to pave the way for the future, and I’d rather go now and leave the memories of the audience of like, ‘Man, he always gave his all,’ than risk doing bad work. I want to be invisible for a few more times, that’s it. It’s been a great year. I’m very happy to be able to pass the torch to what I think is an extremely capable class of men and women.”
