The Boston party continues.
For the final time in his in-ring career, John Cena appeared before his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts for Monday’s edition of WWE Raw at the TD Garden. Backstage, the 17-time world champion then received a special honor, courtesy of Governor Maura Healey.
“It’s officially John Cena Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts! Huge thanks to @MassGovernor for the special recognition,” the TG Garden confirmed on X alongside a photograph of Cena holding the paperwork, making the November 10th distinction official.
Cena, a graduate of Springfield College, grew up in West Newbury, Massachusetts, about a 45 minute north of Boston. In front of the Boston crowd, Cena expressed excitement for the Last Time Is Now tournament, in which the winner will earn the right to face him in his retirement match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. He also noted that he personally asked WWE to make a stop in Boston amidst his ongoing retirement tour. That ask later proved worthwhile as Cena marked off a major career milestone moments later.
After Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio interrupted Cena, WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque announced that “Dirty” Dom would defend his title against Cena right then and there. Cena defeated Mysterio with an Attitude Adjustment to secure the Intercontinental Championship, the one title that had eluded him. With it, Cena is finally a Grand Slam Champion, with just one month left before he hangs up his wrestling boots for good.
