Update on John Cena’s Retirement Match — Report

What’s the latest on John Cena‘s WWE retirement match scheduled for later this year at Saturday Night’s Main Event?

There has been plenty of speculation and reports surrounding John Cena’s final WWE matches over the next two months. But it now sounds like the company has its plans officially in place for how Cena will round out his legendary career.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dominik Mysterio is favored to leave Saturday Night’s Main Event this weekend with the Intercontinental Championship. Confirming a report from a few weeks ago that he’s planned to defend the title against John Cena later in November at Survivor Series.

This win would make Cena a Grand Slam Champion in WWE. However, he won’t be able to enjoy the reign for long as his final match will take place two weeks later at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, DC.

Meltzer would confirm that the current plan is still for Cena to defend the title against Gunther in his final match this December. The Ring General hasn’t appeared on WWE programming since dropping the World Heavyweight Championship to CM Punk at SummerSlam.

David Otunga reflects on winning the WWE Tag Team Titles with John Cena

The soon-to-be WWE Grand Slam Champion had four reigns as a Tag Team Champion. Holding the titles with four different partners: Batista, David Otunga, Shawn Michaels, and The Miz.

While you would think this title win would have been a highlight of Otunga’s career, the moment wasn’t as joyous to him as many would think, as he detailed in a recent interview with MuscleManMalcolm.

“See, it probably wasn’t as joyous of a moment as people would think,” David Otunga began. “Like winning your first tag team title because I understood the storyline and where we were going, where you know, as Nexus, we now have John Cena as one of our members. We’re kind of pushing him around.

“So we win the titles, but then I knew I was going to lose it the next day. So it’s more like I was part of the story, and don’t get me wrong. It’s an amazing accomplishment. Still, yeah, I’m very proud of it. But just personally, I didn’t feel like I’d earned it yet. Like I was going to have a championship run. Like the company trusted me to hold the title and run.

“I mean, I just got there. I was as green as grass. But it was awesome to be in there, with John Cena, and in this spot, don’t get me wrong. So it was special for that. But in a way, the second reign was kind of more satisfying to myself because it just, to me personally, it just felt more legitimate.” [H/T: Fightful]
