Eddie Kingston Explains Why He’s Uncomfortable With The Spotlight

Eddie Kingston isn’t a fan of the spotlight.

Despite being a regular on AEW television, Eddie Kingston is admittedly still uncomfortable with being in the spotlight. While appearing on Close Up with Renee Paquette, he explained why.

“I was born and raised not to take the spotlight,” Kingston said. “My uncle Kevin, rest in peace, and my dad would beat in my head [that] you’re a Bronx Irish Puerto Rican Catholic; Life’s going to be hard, do what you have to do to survive and move on. That’s it. No spotlight, no nothing. That’s how my family was. We were union people, we busted our asses. We loved our mothers and that’s it. And we believe in God and that’s it. We’re Catholic. That’s all it is. That’s all we are, because in all honesty, it’s crazy that people hit me up and tell me I’m inspiring, I’m this and that. But you know what? It’s not that I hate myself, it’s I have a lot of guilt for things I have done. Guilt for a lot of things I’ve done in my past that I still carry with me.

“Some people call it Catholic guilt. That’s a real thing, man,” he continued. “We were born with that sh*t, and that’s what I carry, so I can’t have people telling me how f***ing great and this and that when there’s more things to do, A. B, I have a lot of baggage that I have to deal with. And I don’t put it on no one else because it’s my baggage. It’s things I did; it’s women I hurt. It’s people who I physically hurt; it’s moments I made my mother cry. There’s moments where my father said, ‘No, leave him. Leave him in the f***ing cell.’ There’s moments that I still have to deal with.”

Kingston Aims To Be A Good Person Now

According to Kingston, his guilt frequently awoke him during the night, causing him to scream and punch his pillow. Even to this day, Kingston says he carries the guilt. Still, he is attempting to better himself.

“I’m not good, but I’m trying to be,” he said. “That’s what helped me get to AEW was trying to be good, starting to mature. I’m still trying.”

After more than a year on the sidelines due to injury, Kingston returned to action at AEW All Out and defeated Big Bill. Since then, he’s also bested the likes of Beast Mortos and Dralistico.
