More On Santos Escobar’s Surprising WWE Return — Report

Santos Escobar re-signed with WWE this week, and according to a new report, his return was viewed with nothing but joy backstage.

According to a new report from Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp, Escobar’s re-signing “pleasantly surprised” many in the back. The star’s contract had initially expired earlier this week, but he and WWE reached a new deal rather quickly. Fightful also noted that WWE made him a “significantly larger offer” to retain him.

Escobar himself has not commented on his new contract. However, he posted a photo of himself wearing a mask while shooting new promotional photos. Prior to joining WWE, Escobar was known as El Hijo del Fantasma.

His tenure under the mask was highly decorated, as he is a former CMLL World Middleweight and CMLL World Trios Champion. He is also the longest-reigning AAA World Cruiserweight Champion.

Escobar hasn’t competed on WWE programming since he appeared on the Worlds Collide special with AAA on June 7. He worked two back-to-back WWE Live events at the end of July in Mexico, but has not competed since then. Despite that, he has appeared on SmackDown in a managerial capacity for Legado del Fantasma’s Angel and Berto on the August 1 episode of SmackDown.
