We now have a major update on the WWE status of Santos Escobar.
The former NXT Cruiserweight Champion hasn’t competed on WWE programming since the last Worlds Collide special with AAA on June 7. When he and Los Garza defeated El Hijo del Dr. Wagner Jr., Pagano, and Psycho Clown.
Escobar would go on to compete on two back-to-back WWE Live events at the end of July in Mexico. He would end up losing both of those matches and hasn’t been seen since. During this time, Escobar would post teasers on social media that his time with WWE was ending. And now have more information regarding his future with the company.
According to Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp (via Fightful Select), WWE sources have informed him that Santos Escobar’s contract is up “very soon.” And it doesn’t appear he’ll be staying with the company. While it was implied to Sapp that the two sides discussed an extension, that’s not something he’s been able to confirm.
Sapp would later provide an update that Escobar’s WWE contract expires tonight at midnight. This would allow him to appear on AEW programming as soon as tomorrow if the two sides wish to work together.
Santos Escobar’s WWE career
The former El Hijo del Fantasma signed with WWE back in August of 2019. However, a knee injury would prevent him from appearing on NXT until April of 2020 as part of the Cruiserweight Championship tournament.
Fantasma would go on to win the tournament and later unmasked himself under his current name of Santos Escobar. He would remain in NXT until his WWE main roster debut in December 2022. Where he would appear alongside Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde as Legado del Fantasma.
They would eventually be renamed the Latino World Order for a time before a disagreement with Rey Mysterio led to Escobar forming Legado del Fantasma with Los Garza.
