After getting released from WWE, Matt Riddle started competing for independent wrestling promotions. He is currently part of Major League Wrestling, and recently held the promotion’s World Heavyweight Championship.
Riddle took part in a recent interview with TMZSports, which ended controversially. During this conversation, Matt Riddle talked about WWE and even dragged the name of Brock Lesnar. In the conclusion, the podcaster asked Riddle about MMA and made some remarks, which Riddle felt were slightly disrespectful.
Things escalated from there, and it ended with Riddle grabbing host Branson Quirke by the collar and throwing him down. After this, Riddle left the set and took a TMZ title belt with him.
The segment seemed like a work designed to get attention, and it was effective, judging by the headlines it generated. Riddle seemed to be laughing during the incident, and also “gently” laid Quirke down on the table, rather than slamming him onto it or through it.
Matt Riddle recently lost a major World Championship
A few weeks ago, Matt Riddle defended his MLW World Heavyweight Championship in a three-way match where he locked horns against Mads Krule Krügger and Donovan Dijak at Fightland.
Despite his best effort, Riddle failed to retain his Championship and suffered the title loss when Mads Krule won the match. The loss put an end to Riddle’s 245-day title reign as MLW World Champion.
That match was during a turbulent period for Riddle, who was accused of no-showing and ripping off a charity wrestling event. Riddle defended himself and claimed he was innocent of any wrongdoing. This claim came despite the promotion’s claims that Riddle knew the details of their agreement months in advance. Riddle also got torched after he called people who believed the allegations against him “dumb f*cking cunts.”
Riddle was referring to Samantha Tavel’s 2020 accusations that he sexually assaulted her. The former WWE star claimed they were in a consensual relationship. Tavel sued Riddle, but the lawsuit was ultimately dropped.
