CM Punk and AEW didn’t part ways under the best of circumstances, but he was still part of some big moments in AEW history.
Wednesday night marked Dynamite’s 6th anniversary show. AEW celebrated the occasion with a Dynamite broadcast in Hollywood, Florida, and clips of past highlights. One video shown on the broadcast featured infamous highlights like Samoa Joe’s ‘Nope!’ fakeout on Jon Cruz, Cody Rhodes’ moonsault off of the steel cage in Atlanta, and Britt Baker’s bloody face after her unsanctioned ‘Lights Out’ match with Thunder Rosa.
CM Punk was featured about halfway in, wearing face paint to match Sting, who had painted Punk’s ‘straight edge fists’ logo on his face. Sting, CM Punk and Darby Allin teamed up against FTR and MJF at AEW Dynamite: Holiday Bash on December 2021.
This was the only time Punk and Sting competed together on Dynamite, but it was the first of two matches CM Punk and Sting would share the ring for. They teamed with Allin and HOOK for an eight-man tag match against Jay White, Luchasaurus, Brian Cage and Swerve Strickland on AEW Collision in August 2023. This match would be Punk’s penultimate match in AEW, as he left the company due to his backstage fight with Jack Perry before competing against Samoa Joe at AEW All In: London.
