John Cena‘s WWE retirement match will take place in Washington, DC instead of Boston. But why?
Earlier this month, WWE announced that John Cena’s final appearance in Boston for his farewell tour will take place on November 10 for an episode of RAW.
It was reported later on that Cena’s retirement match, which was originally scheduled to take place in Boston, will now happen in Washington, DC instead. But why did this change happen?
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the decision to go to DC instead of Boston was a financial decision by those within WWE.
Meltzer reports that WWE asked for a site fee from Boston for this event that would have been similar to the $7 million that New Jersey recently paid for SummerSlam. The city of Boston felt the asking price was too high, believing that an event that close to Christmas wouldn’t generate the level of tourism needed to justify the cost.
These are the final scheduled dates of Cena’s WWE career:
- RAW in Springfield, MA — September 15
- WrestlePalooza in Indianapolis — September 20
- Crown Jewel in Perth, Australia — October 11
- RAW in Boston — November 10
- RAW in New York City — November 17
- Survivor Series in San Diego, CA — November 29
- Retirement Match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, DC — December 13
