The Undertaker Explains Why He Won’t Put the Hat & Coat Back On

The Undertaker doesn’t want to bring back a crucial element to his Deadman persona.

The real-life Mark Calaway entertained the WWE Universe for decades before deciding to step away from the squared circle back in 2020. Taker’s swansong came against AJ Styles in a boneyard match at WrestleMania 36. He has continued to appear since, but only as a special attraction.

During a recent episode of his Six Feet Under podcast, The Undertaker was asked if he’d be willing to put his iconic ring gear—his all-black hat and coat—back on one more time.

“When I retired, I retired half of my character,” Taker said. “The hat, the coat, that whole side of the Undertaker, I retired. I kind of retained the American Badass part of it. The one that can relate to the people. That helps me. I will not jeopardize that part of my legacy. It frustrates a lot of people who want to do business with me because they want that.”

The Undertaker explains how he protects his legacy

“The hat and coat are synonymous. When you hear Undertaker, that’s what you envision. The fact that I’m at a point where I absolutely will not put it back on, that’s how I protect that. I can’t imagine, even in this day, with the way everything is put out there for everybody to see, I could not do it. There is absolutely no way that I could do it. Sell something or do an ad with the hat and coat. No. There is no way.” [H/T Fightful]

The Undertaker, most recently, appeared on WWE NXT, where he was involved in a heated confrontation with Trick Williams. The segment saw Taker deliver his signature chokeslam on the TNA World Champion. He also appears as one of the four coaches on WWE LFG.
