Saraya reveals the one “romantic” storyline she wasn’t comfortable doing in AEW.
During a recent episode of her Rulebreakers podcast, Saraya was asked if she’d ever turned down a storyline in WWE or AEW, and which one was it. The former AEW Women’s Champion said she was asked to do a storyline with Daddy Magic. Saraya noted that they clarified it was “only” a kiss, but she still wasn’t comfortable with it and had a boyfriend at the time.
“Oh yeah, AEW. So there’s a wrestler called Daddy Magic and Tony [Khan], they wanted me to do a love storyline. I’ve managed to go in my whole career without doing a love storyline, and I wasn’t going to start,” Saraya explained. “They’re like, ‘No, all he’s going to do is kiss you.’ And I had a boyfriend at the time, and I was just like, ‘I can’t do it, you guys. I can’t do it.’
“So I turned down that. There’s not anything really else storyline-wise that I’ve turned down, it’s just that if I have a boyfriend at the time and I have to kiss someone, I just don’t think that it’s appropriate, unless the boyfriend is ok with it. I’m just joking [about the last part].”
Saraya never had to turn down a romantic wrestling angle before
Saraya isn’t sure how she was able to turn down storylines throughout her career. She noted it wasn’t something she really had to deal with, adding that it was nothing against Daddy Magic.
“I don’t know. I’ve never really had them come up and ask [my opinion on romantic storylines like that]. ‘Hey, do you want to kiss somebody today?’ I’ve never had that, until I got to AEW. And then they were like, ‘Can you kiss Daddy Magic?’ And I love Daddy Magic, good guy yeah, but I just couldn’t do it.”
Saraya announced her departure from AEW in March. Since then, she has expressed her interest in training with Natalya and resuming her in-ring career. She also clarified rumors about whether she’s headed back to WWE, explaining that she has other goals she wants to accomplish over the next year.
Her new book, Hell in Boots: Clawing My Way Through Nine Lives, is available now.
