Kenny Omega recently spoke about the growing talk of a potential mixed tag team tournament in AEW.
During his Twitch stream, Omega shared that he often hears discussions within the company about the idea. He said he’s been thinking more about possible tag team pairings than singles matches.
“I keep hearing every now and then, it’s tossed around, every now and then in AEW the ramblings of having a mixed tag matches tournament. I keep hearing the possibility of maybe doing this tournament. I’d put more thought into what a tag team would look like rather than what a singles would look like. Someone had said Mayu Iwatani, that would be cool to have her and someone team up Starlight kid and someone team up. Those are two of my favorites from Stardom, for sure, right now. Countless others. Chihiro Hashimoto, she is incredible, too. She would dump me on my head so terribly.” [H/T: Fightful]
While Omega has mentioned hearing about the possibility of a mixed tag team tournament, he has already named a potential tag partners from Stardom. Omega competed in a mixed tag team match on AEW Dark in 2020, teaming up with Riho to face Kip Sabian and Penelope Ford.
Kenny Omega wants to be a guy people talk about as part of the positive wrestling movement
On the January 8 edition of AEW Dynamite, Kenny Omega addressed the fans after the show. “Look, as a fan of wrestling, not only am I happy to perform for you, but I’m happy to watch the stars of AEW and heck, any promotion. I am just happy to watch professional wrestling. And in the year 2025, oh my goodness, is professional wrestling ever thriving.”
“So no matter how you guys choose to consume it, professional wrestling is alive and well. And boy, it’s taking over the world. If I have any power at all over my person, if I can be even a sliver of what I used to be, I want to be at the forefront of that movement. I want to be one of the people that people talk about when they are talking about this positive wrestling movement.”
Kenny Omega currently holds the AEW International Championship and recently defended it against Mike Bailey and Ricochet at AEW Dynasty. After the match, Kazuchika Okada, the AEW Continental Champion, stepped up to confront him.
Reports indicate that AEW is considering a title unification match between the titles. Fans are already buzzing about the possibility of Omega and Okada clashing in a major showdown, potentially at All In later this year.
