Rob Van Dam gets candid about a recent moment on AEW Dynamite.
Jon Moxley is no stranger to violence in the ring. Last week on Dynamite, though, that violence reached a new level when Cope (Adam Copeland) suplexed him onto a spiked bat. Making matters worse, the bat became lodged in Moxley’s back. This spot elicited mixed reactions from AEW viewers, with some appreciating its freshness, while others felt it was too intense.
On a recent episode of 1 Of A Kind, WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam weighed in on the particular spot (h/t to Dominic DeAngelo for the transcription). RVD said it was not for him, even making him question being linked to AEW.
“It’s not my thing, not my kind of thing,” Van Dam said. “That’s not wrestling to me. But obviously that is sacrificing a lot for the business, I mean that could be said about it. But the more AEW has been doing stuff like that, the more personally I feel like I would rather be associated with WWE than AEW.
“Like a couple years ago it was like, ‘Man they’re growing, they’re trying things to get up there.’ And then there’s a feel that like the inmates are running the prison. Which there always has been, for better or worse. I mean that was used as a good point at first. ‘Hey, the boys are running it, cool.’ But for me this serves as an example of why that might not be a good idea but it is a style of wrestling I personally look at it as being lower than the standard, substandard because it’s going to draw only a certain niche crowd that’s into that kind of stuff.”
Van Dam Congratulates AEW For Pulling Off The Spot
Van Dam personally considers the move to be “crazy dangerous.” However, he recognizes that AEW may have considered it to be “cool,” which would prompt them and their performers to go through with it.
“Congratulations to pulling off a crazy stunt, death defying stunt for better or worse, you know?” Van Dam said.
Despite being impaled by Cope’s spiked bat, Moxley later emerged victorious in this Street Fight. Looking ahead, he will now defend the very title against Swerve Strickland at AEW Dynasty.
Rob Van Dam has competed for AEW several times between 2023 and 2024. His last match was a “High Flying 4/20 Elimination Four Way” on the “4/20” edition of Rampage last year.
