Queen Sharmell’s Look Was Inspired By Diana Ross, Says Playing A Heel Was ‘Almost Freeing’

One of the most iconic characters in WWE history is the ‘King Booker’ gimmick of Booker T. The WWE Hall of Famer had won the King of The Ring tournament and thus King Booker was born. His wife also got to play a major role during the era of King Booker. That was how the character, Queen Sharmell was born.

While speaking to McKenzie Mitchell on her Threads series, WWE Hall of Famer Queen Sharmell reflected on her run in WWE and how much she loved playing the heel.

“So, it was awesome because I did have my pageantry days to pull from. Now, what was a little difficult but ended up being the best time of my life was when we turned heel. Because I’m so used to pageantry and you know you wave and everybody loves you and they applaud you. But when they boo you, that’s something completely different.

“So, there was an initial shock with that. But then all of a sudden I fell in love with it and I said, ‘How have I ever been anything else but a heel?’ Absolutely love it. Just became it [the heel persona].”

Playing the heel was “almost freeing” says Queen Sharmell

“You know, it was almost freeing. You don’t have to worry about if people… ‘No. They don’t like you. So you don’t have to worry about, do they like you.’ You don’t have to worry about this. You don’t have to worry about that. You know you are going to get booed. So, it was almost relaxing if that even makes sense. I just loved it… I think it was immediate. Because so much of my life has been subjective. I’ve been doing pageants since I was 12 years old. And that’s subjective, will the judges like you? Will they not? Will they appreciate this talent, that look, this style? You never know. It’s completely subjective. So to just be able to go out there and say this is what it is, this is what you get…”

Sharmell also shared how she chooses her outfit for the shows.

“Just whatever I like. I would just go into different stores and if it… First, it had to have rhinestone or sequin to catch my eye. But that truly was just whatever I like.“

She also recalled the time her attire was inspired by Diana Ross.

“One of my WrestleMania… I won’t even say dresses. I will say my WrestleMania attire was solely based on Diana Ross. So your old school, Motown singers, entertainers, and I absolutely call them Queens,” Queen Sharmell said.
