Matt Cardona Explains Benefits Of New Role As GCW GM

Matt Cardona is please with his new role in GCW.

The former WWE Superstar recently suffered a torn pec, keeping him out of the ring due to injury. In the meantime, he was hired as the new general manager of GCW, keeping him employed while being unable to wrestle on the indies.

Matt Cardona spoke on Busted Open Radio (via POST Wrestling). He spoke about his new role as general manager of GCW, explaining how it benefits him as a performer following his injury.

He revealed that he has “built up a skillset” that nobody else has on the indies. This allowed him to take the role as GM, even though he cannot wrestle for the foreseeable future.

“So, long story short, I clotheslined someone over the top rope and I tore my pec. Stuff happens, this ain’t ballet, nobody’s fault. It’s an unfortunate situation. There’s no good time to get injured. But this is not a good time, you know? Especially for me. But, I’m already back on the road making shows like you said. I’m the new General Manager of GCW so I’ll be out of in-ring competition for the next few months.”

“But I’ll still be making towns. I’ve built up a skillset. I don’t need to wrestle. I can cut a promo, I can be the General Manager, I can do commentary, meet and greets. So, GCW this week, I was on the show more times than normal. I opened the show with a promo, I did commentary, I did backstage stuff, I came out at the end so, you know, yeah, of course I can wrestle but so can everybody — well, in theory, they should be able to. I can do everything else so that’s the appeal to me.”

Matt Cardona: GCW Put Me On The Map

Matt Cardona will be in GCW as long as he’s on the indies. He made that clear when he spoke with WrestleZone recently. The former Zack Ryder called GCW his “home promotion”, and says GCW put him on the map after leaving the WWE.

“Am I at every single show? No! But I’m there every month. Twice a month, three times a month. GCW is my home independent promotion in my opinion. And as much as I feel like I put GCW on the map, GCW put me on the map,” he said. “As crazy as it seems, and everyone knows, I was in WWE for over a decade. But once I left, I needed to find myself. And GCW helped me find myself. And it’s been the greatest four years of my career.”
