Drew McIntyre Says WWE Creative Gave Him A Blank Canvas To Be Himself

Drew McIntyre opens up about his current creative freedom in WWE.

The Scottish Warrior is heading to WrestleMania 40 where he will challenge Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship. Ahead of the bout, McIntyre appeared on Gorilla Position and was asked about how excited he is that the pieces are falling into place for him going into the biggest show of the year.

“A huge excitement for me personally,” McIntyre said. “Obviously I’ve loved what I’ve done since I returned to WWE, returned to RAW, when I was the champion, the work I did during the pandemic, and how important it is to me personally and how necessary it was for the times… That was the real Drew as I was feeling what I was going through, what everyone was going through.”

McIntyre noted that while the emotions were very real, he reached a point where he knew it was time to evolve. He realized that when he came out to the ring, fans met him with, ‘Oh, there’s Drew.’

“I kind of went through that process of, okay, I’m old hat,” McIntyre continued. “I can be slide in wherever to help a talent elevate, you know, like GUNTHER and the likes. It’s not working for me, brother. I didn’t come here to make up the numbers. I came here to be the top of the card, make a true difference to the overall show. And I didn’t feel like we were doing it, and these past few months I really got given the opportunity to ‘be you, show the real you.’ Show what’s going on inside, tell whatever story you’re feeling you can tell, and things are a little different.”

Drew McIntyre On WWE’s Creative Team

Drew McIntyre then detailed being able to tap into the past and use whatever he wanted to paint his picture. He highlighted the way he collaborated with the creative team, and he praised the writers. McIntyre also emphasized that what he says on WWE programming are his words.

“You can go into the past, you can use whatever you want to help paint your picture,” he said. “They gave me that blank canvas and I’ve been able to do with it what I want, obviously in collaboration with the writers. Our creative team is so phenomenal with the way they set up the week to weeks. I can’t think of that stuff, that’s what’s great about it. They think of the bigger picture and where are we getting to. Each week I can paint my canvas to tell that story to get to the final destination.

“It reminds me of my independent run where I was finally given full creative because it was basically, ‘You’re going to make money and be able to pay for your house and stuff that your wife and you just bought and you just got fired and you have nothing and it has to work.’ I learned how to draw money and be on top, how to find myself. It was all basically my stuff the entire time, and now what you’re seeing now is a collaboration, but it’s very much my words 100%, and you can feel that.”
