Trick Williams says he asked Shawn Michaels to give him the ball.
The one-time NXT North American Champion is set to compete in his first Iron Survivor Challenge match at NXT Deadline on December 9. A future shot at the NXT Championship is on the line as Williams looks to cap off an impressive 2023.
During a recent interview with Denise Salcedo, Williams opened up about what he attributes his growth to.
“Probably a few things,” Williams said. “Firstly, this is the vision that I had for myself all along. This is what I wanted for myself. I wanted to be a superstar. I wanted to be the guy. With that being said, I was brought into WWE alongside of Carmelo Hayes, which is one of the best NXT superstars to ever do it. So I’m very fortunate for that. That was my boy, and with me being so close to him, I got to learn a lot. I got to see how you conduct business, your mindset going into these big matches.
“I got to be in the light even though it was kind of more of his light, but I didn’t have the pressure. So now being at those big stages, ‘Okay, this is what it feels like. Okay, this is what it’s about right here.’ Being able to build connections with the crowd was awesome for me, and also I was able to build my hunger because when you see your boy eat, it makes you want to have some success on your own too.”
Trick Williams: I Wanted The Ball
Trick Williams then recalled going to Shawn Michaels and making it clear that he wanted the ball. He drew a comparison between wrestling and football, as he described how wide receivers need to catch the ball in order to score. Williams then noted that Michaels gave him a chance, and he has run with it.
“That’s just what it was to the point where I had to go to Shawn Michaels myself and say, ‘Shawn, I want the ball.’ I played football before I was wrestling and I played wide receiver. Wide receivers are the guys who catch the ball. If you don’t catch the ball, you can’t eat, you can’t score touchdowns, the camera’s not on you.
“So me being able to go to Shawn Michaels’ office and saying, ‘I want the ball,’ is probably the best thing I could’ve ever done because he looked me straight in the eye and said, ‘A lot of people come in my office and say they want the ball, but they’re not ready for it,’ and we just go from there. He gave me the opportunity and thus far, I’ve been making plays with it.”
Williams would like to think it’s his natural charisma that helped him show that he’s ready for the spot he’s in. He may not have the experience, but he puts in the time training. On top of that, he believes people are born to do this and he feels like he was meant to be a superstar.
