Jeff Jarrett has explored a handful of gimmicks throughout his wrestling career, but few compare to the country music star persona Jarrett debuted in the early 1990s.
Upon his return to WWE in 1993, Jeff Jarrett unleashed a new heel gimmick under the guise of a country music star dubbed as “Double J.” During a recent appearance on Cultaholic, Jarrett revealed the inspiration behind this original WWE persona.
“In the creation of the character, it was something that [made me think], ‘What does a country music star wear as a wrestling outfit? Is it boots and tights?’ No. So, I wanted something over the top. The character was obviously an extension of my personality, but it was larger than life and spelling my name and arrogant and cocky. So, that was the mindset. And if you kind of go back to the 80s and it really even the 70s country music stars that really stood out with their outfits, it was loud and lots of different colors and lots of rhinestones and that,” Jarrett said.
Larger Than Life
“So that was kind of the mindset of do a larger-than-life wrestling outfit that fits the character. And the fact that we’re still talking about it to this day, whether you hated it or loved it, it struck a chord. I think that’s part of the magic of that ‘Double J’ character, is that the over-the-top interviews and the outfits. But I think my in-ring work people immediately went, ‘Man, he’s an a**hole, but he can wrestle a little bit.’ I think that’s part of the magic.”
During his initial run with the “Double J” gimmick, Jarrett secured three reigns as the WWE Intercontinental Champion — the first of which came upon a victory over Razon Ramon.
