Kerry Morton Cites Some Of His Father’s Biggest Rivals As Influences On His Work

Kerry Morton continues to pave his path in the National Wrestling Alliance alongside his father, Ricky Morton.

NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Kerry Morton recently sat down with WrestleZone’s Managing Editor Bill Pritchard. When asked if he’s taken inspiration from his father’s rivals over the years, Morton confirmed that to be the case.

Kerry said he’s a huge Midnight Express fan, whether it was Bobby Eaton teaming with Dennis Condry or Stan Lane.

“Bobby was known for his beautiful work inside the wrestling ring, inside that squared circle. So you’ll notice if you look around inside my office there’s so much endorsement of Bobby Eaton. I am absolutely a huge mark. Bobby lived with us for years on end and showed me so many small things,” he noted. “As a young guy, before I got into wrestling, watching matches with him from the independents, and watching tapes from downstairs in our living room, and him going through the details that a lot of people don’t consider. So that’s something I try to take, and I try to put my perspective on it.”

Picking the minds of legends

Kerry said he’s also a big fan of the late Brad Armstrong. He says he tries to tie it together and add an element of realism to his work.

“That’s the perspective of professional wrestling I’m trying to tie back in. So watching all their work and seeing what they’re capable of, I always try to tie in different things,” he explained. “My dad gives me so many pointers, and Robert too, go out of their way to watch all my pointers. Robert just called me right before I was in a meeting before this and told me, ‘Hey, just watched your match on YouTube, think you could do this better if you just cleaned this up a little more, this would look much better in the future.’ And I don’t take that for granted.”

Kerry cited Austin Idol as another influence. He also said Nick Aldis was also very hands-on with him prior to the “National Treasure” leaving the company.

“That’s something I’m very appreciative of. He’d tell me, ‘Hey, Kerry, your time is gonna be soon. This is how you need to start looking at the future so you can start building yourself in the gym, in the locker room with your gear,'” Morton explained. “‘[Build] with your move set, with your mindset. That’s something I’m very appreciative for that’s helped me to get to where I am now.”
