Eddie Kingston talks competing in his first G1 Climax.
AEW star Eddie Kingston is set to compete in his first G1 Climax in New Japan Pro-Wrestling — a 32-man, four-block style tournament that will conclude in August. During a recent interview with NJPW’s official website, Kingston explained how this opportunity means everything to him.
“It means everything to me. It’s what I’ve wanted to do since I got started in the business. The pinnacle of pro wrestling. You have to be battle hardened, you have to be battle tested to survive here,” Kingston said.
Other AEW stars like Lance Archer and Jon Moxley have crossed over to NJPW, but Kingston wants to prove to fans all around the world that he can work the Japanese style.
“I wanna show all the fans — not just AEW fans —that I can do this style. That I’ve studied this style before I even broke in.”
The reigning NJPW STRONG Openweight Champion also shared his belief that the Japanese style is the best in the world.
“To me, Japanese professional wrestling is the best professional wrestling in the world. I felt that ever since I was a teenager,” Kingston said. “My first pro-wrestling tape had Muto versus Chono in the 1991 G1 final. That blew my mind, and it made me want to be here more than anywhere else.”
Kingston also noted that he felt like his career was over when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020. He never thought he’d reach this point and now wants to “do good” for the fans and all of the NJPW legends that he looked up to.
