Bret Hart Feels Bad He Didn’t Work With Steve Austin More

Bret Hart has nothing but pleasant things to say about Steve Austin.

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin recently opened up about how Bret Hart means a lot to him. “The Hitman” had a chance to respond during a recent interview with The Wrestling Classic, where he echoed the sentiment and recalled how he had a hand in getting Austin to WWE.

“What I like to remember about all that [is] when I was one of the guys that went to Vince literally a few weeks before he got signed on by WWF and asked him to see if they could get Steve Austin in,” Hart said, “and then I remember coming in and going, ‘Yeah, I just heard he signed with ECW.’ I was kind of mad at Vince and different guys because I didn’t get him. It was like two or three days later or a week later, I remember he’s sitting in the dressing room, and I couldn’t believe that [because of] my complaint that he got signed by ECW, he got out of that contract and signed with WWF and that’s when he came in in ’96.”

Hart reiterated that he believes he had a lot to do with getting Austin back to WWE after voicing his frustrations to McMahon. Knowing that he was a good friend of Rick Rude, Hart felt that he had a certain chemistry with Austin upon meeting and he believed in him to make it on his own, regardless of Hart’s help at the beginning.

“Every match I ever had with Steve, every match, whether it was in South Africa or Germany or England or wherever it was, he was so much fun to work with. We had such a great chemistry,” Hart added. “Believe it or not, I think most of the matches that we had, we didn’t put a lot of thought or planning into it. It was just two guys that were very comfortable with each other in the ring.

“Very few wrestlers with the exception of maybe Curt Hennig and maybe my brother Owen were more fun to work with than Steve. He was always fun out there. He was always safe and careful, and always a pro, and a great listener. He trusted me and we just always had a great chemistry. I really do feel bad that we didn’t get to have more matches.”
