Had Cody Rhodes not heard what he did in his meeting with Vince McMahon, he may have never returned to WWE.
The American Nightmare recently sat down with David Dennis Jr. of ESPN to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about his meeting with Vince McMahon in early 2022, ahead of his WWE return, Rhodes admitted that he wasn’t going into that meeting with the intention of signing a deal.
“I wasn’t going in there to sign,” Cody Rhodes remembers. “And I left thinking, ‘Are you about to sign?’ I really wanted the meeting to be about saying I’m sorry for [how I left]. I hope you guys are sorry about some things too. I wanted to hear that I was right about one specific thing: Stardust had run its course. Sometimes you need to see the destination for the journey. And that was something I wasn’t getting from anybody. I told Vince McMahon I was the best wrestler in the world. I think I have been for a while. And he didn’t argue with me about that.”
At the end of the day, it seems it was all about respect for Cody Rhodes, something that he also sees in the way his WrestleMania 39 opponent Roman Reigns carries himself.
“Just to see the respect [Reigns] commands because of what he’s done for WWE. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Cody Rhodes said. “Roman takes on that sense of royalty. That’s really special because that’s what’s happening in Mania — two families who really both want to leave with the title.”
