Matt Cardona: NWA Wants To Get To The Next Level, Give Me The Goddamn Ball

Matt Cardona wants to take the National Wrestling Alliance to the next level.

Cardona arrived in the NWA at the end of 2021, and it wasn’t long before he reached the mountaintop; he defeated Trevor Murdoch at NWA PowerrrTrip in February 2022 to win the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship. But his title reign came to an abrupt end when he suffered a torn bicep in May, and he was forced to relinquish the title as the injury would put him on the shelf for the next few months. He returned to the NWA ring at NWA 74, and he has been on a mission to regain the gold ever since.

At NWA Hard Times 3, Cardona didn’t walk away with the gold when he challenged for it in a three-way match with Murdoch, the reigning champion, and Tyrus. Instead, Tyrus emerged victorious, and because Cardona was not pinned, he has earned another title match at NWA Nuff said on February 11.

In an interview with WrestleZone, Cardona discussed his mission to regain the gold. He stated that he wants to get the title back so he can take it all over the place and represent the company, much like he did during his first run.

“Right now, my focus is on me, and that’s selfish, sure, but that’s the truth. I just want my championship. I want that NWA Title back around my waist, I want to carry it in my bag, go to all these towns, make these towns, wrestle these new opponents, and represent the NWA,” Cardona said.

Cardona stated that 2023 will be about him, and he’ll aim to make that message a reality when he challenges for the gold at NWA Nuff Said. Ahead of the match, Cardona stated that fans will see history one way or the other at the show. He noted that he could win the title and take the NWA to new heights, but if he loses, the former champion wondered who could possibly be the one to take the company to the next level. Cardona then emphasized that if the company wants to grow, he should get the  ball.

“[Fans] need to tune into this because they are gonna witness history,” Cardona said. “They’re either gonna witness Matt Cardona win the championship again, the championship I never lost, and take the NWA to new heights, or they’re gonna see Tyrus win, and then the NWA is gonna scramble. If not me, who? If not now, when? The NWA, it wants to get to that next level? Give the the goddamn ball.”

WrestleZone will have coverage of NWA Nuff Said as it airs on FITE on February 11.
