“Speedball” Mike Bailey discusses the impact Kevin Owens has had on his career.
In recent years, Bailey has become one of the most buzzworthy wrestlers on the independent scene. He signed with IMPACT Wrestling and debited at the Hard To Kill pay-per-view in 2022. During his time with the company, Bailey has competed in a number of renowned bouts, including a 60-minute match against Josh Alexander.
Speaking with Alistair McGeorge of Metro, Bailey discussed his career, and in one highlight, he brought up the way Owens influenced him. He noted that Owens’ mind for the business impressed him and motivated him to step up his game.
“Kevin Steens, now Owens, was a big part of my growth as a professional wrestler,” Bailey said. “He was one of the many moments – I’ve had a lot – where I was like, “Wow, this person, their brain is way more equipped for professional wrestling than mine and I really need to step it up and figure out what they’re doing.”
In addition to his work with IMPACT, Bailey remains active on the independent scene. Earlier in January, he reached a new high when he won the prestigious PWG Battle of Los Angeles tournament. The list of winners includes Kenny Omega, Adam Cole, El Generico (Sami Zayn), and Ricochet. Bailey shared his thoughts on joining this impressive list.
“Man, so objectively this is how I know I should feel, right,” Bailey said. “I know I should feel honored, it should be unbelievable – but this is how it’s always been for me,’ he admitted with a smile.
“I’ve never been one to get choked up or tear up or get emotional after a big victory. It’s not a surprise, it never is, and not in pro wrestling for different reasons. but even back in martial arts, when I would win big tournaments I would always be like… Yeah’ I worked for this. I looked to this moment and worked towards it for eight years. This is not a surprise. This should happen.”
Bailey will face Kenny King in a Pit Fight Match on the January 19 episode of IMPACT Wrestling.
