John Cena returned to the ring on the final episode of WWE SmackDown in 2022.
Cena teamed up with Kevin Owens to face Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn. In doing so, Cena continued his streak of wrestling in at least one match every year since his debut in 2022. Cena hadn’t wrestled on WWE programming since he unsuccessfully challenged Reigns for the Universal Championship at WWE SummerSlam 2021. A few weeks later, he wrestled in a dark match at the September 10 taping of SmackDown, which was held at Madison Square Garden. The match on Friday night marked Cena’s first time wrestling on television since 2019.
Throughout the bout, Reigns and Zayn stopped Cena from tagging in. At the end of the bout. Cena finally made the tag and hit his classic flurry of offense. He and Owens did a Double Five Knuckle Shuffle, and Cena dropped Reigns with an Attitude Adjustment. Owens then pinned Zayn with a Stunner.
