Matt Cardona wasn’t sold on the idea of a wrestling musical at first but came around to it after speaking to the producer of the show.
IMPACT Wrestling‘s Matt Cardona was a recent guest on INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about how The Last Match musical came about, Cardona said he isn’t sure because he was brought into it late in the process.
“I don’t know exactly because I came in pretty late,” Matt Cardona admitted. “This guy, Jeremiah, he is the producer. He’s the main man. He’s the Vince McMahon of this project, right? And he contacted me about this or got somebody to contact me about it. At first I’m like, a wrestling musical? Yuck. No thanks! But then I talked to Jeremiah, and he was so convincing, so passionate.
“I read the script, but listen, I didn’t read the whole thing. I read part of it and thought this is actually really cool. You know what, like, then all these real Broadway stars are attached. Well, if they’re doing it, I’d be a fool to turn this down, right? So I agreed to do it. And then I read the whole script, realizing I’m in the whole goddamn thing, and I’m like, shit! I gotta remember all these lines!?”
Cardona admitted that he knew doing this role wouldn’t be easy, but he didn’t anticipate how hard it would be.
“I’m in this; it’s like a two-hour show. I’m in it the whole time,” Matt Cardona said. “I’m singing, I’m wrestling, there’s dialogue. I didn’t think it was gonna be easy, but I didn’t anticipate how hard it would be. Very, very challenging.”
