In a stunning close to the December 12 episode of WWE RAW, Seth Rollins earned himself a shot at the WWE United States Championship, and Bobby Lashley seemingly lost his job.
In a match to be the #1 Contender for the title, things very quickly fell apart. The bout itself was a back-and-forth affair, and both Rollins and Lashley had chances to end things. As the match came to a close, Lashley looked like he was on the edge of victory with the Hurt Lock, but Rollins was able to back his opponent into a corner to break it up. As he did, the referee was knocked out of the ring. Lashley hit Rollins with a Spear and went for the pin, but the referee was too slow to make the count.
Rollins then reversed a second Spear into the Pedigree for the win. After the match, a stunned Lashley then began assaulting the official, and he also laid his hands on a second referee who tried to help. As more officials came down, Adam Pearce came out and warned Lashley to stop. Instead, Lashley shoved him into the security barricade, resulting in Pearce “firing” the former WWE Champion on the spot.
