It looks as if William Regal is going to return to WWE.
Two weeks after turning on Blackpool Combat Club stablemate Jon Moxley and helping MJF win the AEW Championship at Full Gear, Regal was attacked by MJF and stretchered out of the arena. There’s been recent speculation about William Regal’s status in All Elite Wrestling, and those talks have only intensified as he was seemingly written off of AEW TV on Wednesday night.
According to a new report from PWInsider.com, “all signs” are that William Regal is WWE-bound once again. It should be noted that there’s no official response from the company about Regal’s next move, but there have been “rumblings” that Regal could return to WWE in a backstage role.
In a subsequent update from Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp, it is believed that Regal’s AEW contract is up in December. It was further noted on Fightful Select that talent is under the belief that Regal’s deal is up in December. Regal’s status was also a topic of speculation at WrestleCade weekend in North Carolina, and there is “absolutely” interest on the WWE side of bringing him back into the fold.
William Regal worked in WWE for two separate runs, with the most recent one beginning in 2000. After his in-ring career ended, Regal worked as an on-air authority figure and WWE’s Director of Talent Development and Head of Global Recruiting. Regal was released from his contract in January 2022 and he joined All Elite Wrestling in March.
William Regal was seen as one of Paul Levesque’s most trusted colleagues, but he was ultimately let go along with a group of other Levesque staff members. In addition to the link to Levesque, Regal’s son, Bailey Matthews (aka Charlie Dempsey) is also working for WWE with the NXT brand.
