Becky Lynch believes she can help the business more as a heel.
The former WWE RAW Women’s Champion became one of WWE‘s top stars as a babyface before she took some time away due to her pregnancy and the subsequent birth of her daughter, Roux. Upon her return at WWE SummerSlam 2021, she turned heel and feuded with fan-favorite stars like Bianca Belair at Liv Morgan. She later turned face after her match with Belair at WWE SummerSlam 2022, but she suffered an injury during the bout. As a result, she has been sidelined since the following episode of WWE RAW.
At a NYC AW panel (video courtesy of Nicole Plaza), Lynch discussed several topics, and she was asked whether she prefers to be a babyface or a heel. In response, she began by explaining that being the bad guy is fun, and in some ways, it’s easier.
“Being a heel is so much fun. I think human nature is we generally just don’t wanna like people, or certainly now, that’s Twitter nature,” Lynch said. “So you have so much freedom in that you can do anything, you can have fun, and if people don’t like you, well, I’m doing my job well. If people like you, well, you’re so entertaining, how could they not like you?
“So it’s a lot easier, it’s a lot more fun in that aspect. Being a babyface, I think I tend to naturally fall into, I think especially because well, honestly I’m not the greatest athlete in the world, and I think my story of perseverance has registered with a lot of people, a lot of fans. They can behind that underdog who constantly has to overcome.
Lynch went on to describe how she feels like she can help the business more as a heel by making the babyfaces look good and getting fans invested in these characters, which is beneficial for women’s wrestling as a whole.
“When it comes to the business and wrestling as a whole, and especially women’s wrestling, I feel like I can be of help by being a heel,” Lynch said. “Because when you’re a babyface, it’s all about you. It’s how good you look, it’s how do we make the audience like you the most. When you’re a heel, it’s all about how do you make the babyface look good? How can you get people invested and want to see this guy win?
“So I feel like I have gotten enough equity with the audience that I’m able to help a babyface and then as a whole, that just helps women’s wrestling when people get more equity and they get more exposure. I think that drives the business forward. So I like both. I like being a heel. I think everybody likes being a heel.”
