Crowbar still works the independent scene at his age because he’s still a big wrestling fan.
Former WCW star Crowbar was recently a guest on Under The Ring to discuss a wide variety of subjects. When asked about what he’s up to at this stage in his wrestling career, Crowbar admitted that he’s still trying to figure that out.
“That’s a good question as I’m trying to figure it out myself,” Crowbar admitted. “Some people have called it a career renaissance. I’m really not sure I’m just out there having a great time, having a hell of a time. Pushing it, working hard, working with a lot of the young lions and tearing it up out there at 48 years old, still have to work hard, still like to go out there and wow the people and where it goes, who knows but having a hell of a time with whatever you want to call this thing I’m doing.”
Crowbar has competed in the wrestling industry for over 30 years. When asked why he’s still competing now, he admits it comes down to his love for professional wrestling.
“It’s very cliche to say, I believe I am the biggest wrestling fan alive,” Crowbar said. “When I first broke into wrestling, that wasn’t a fashionable thing to say if you were in the industry. You never admitted that you were a fan, that you were a mark, that you enjoyed it. I know there’s no cursing rule, but I flipping love professional wrestling, and I’ve been blessed to be able to do it going on 31 years, and I enjoy it now just as much as I did way back when, again, for some people, that’s not fashionable.
“It’s not fashionable to show all your cards and what you feel, but after being in it this long, I really don’t care. I enjoy pushing myself. There’s like this competition with myself. Can I hang with this guy? Two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to work with Rich Swann. One of the best guys out there, and I’m a student. When I get booked against somebody, I will watch video and after video after video while I do my cardio, and I will learn their moveset. I was familiar with rich. I always liked his work, but when you’re going to work with somebody you really watch, and you try to learn their moves.
“If you’re gonna go out there and do your best, you’re going to learn your opponent’s moves. You’re going to learn what they like to do. You’re going to learn how they work out there. So I’ve become a student of that opponent before I work them. So in my mind, it was a challenge. I am challenging myself to be able to hang with Rich when we went out there for Outlaw Pro Wrestling in Brooklyn, New York. I had my handful of very safe, very cool, still extreme-looking spots that I do. I think I still make myself look athletic. I think I am athletic.
“But the real challenge was being able to hang and make sure Rich was able to do all his signature stuff and make sure that I was there. The timing for the basing and everything else. So it’s great working with these guys. It’s great going out there showing that I still hang with these guys and it’s just both entertaining and personally rewarding for myself. It’s a really odd thing. A lot of guys in the business don’t get it. They always say you have a business; you have a family; you’re 48. You did WCW; you did ECW; you did WWE. Why the hell you’re still doing this? Because I flipping love wrestling, and I think I’m entertaining myself as much as I hope I’m entertaining the people out there.”
