Sami Callihan wants to be King of the Mountain.
Callihan recently spoke with WrestleZone about all of the hallmark wrestling matches he’s competed in during his run with IMPACT Wrestling. Victory Road saw Callihan compete in Barbed Wire Massacre and he’s already competed in Monster’s Ball this year. Callihan spoke about making sure the latter was an authentic representation of TNA/IMPACT’s past and cited Abyss as a big influence on his career.
“It’s not a secret. I am a lifelong TNA wrestling fan, a lifelong IMPACT Wrestling fan. Hell, that was one of my goals before I went to other places around the world, I always wanted to be a wrestler for IMPACT Wrestling. I get to do that now on a weekly basis, which is absolutely great. But getting a chance to be in a Monster’s Ball match, to be in a Barbed Wire Massacre match, I want it to be as authentic as possible,” Callihan explained. “That was something extremely important to me going into Slammiversary.
“It’s the anniversary of IMPACT Wrestling, so what better place to do it and do it right than at Slammiversary. Being a lifelong fan, like I have been of this company, everything I do, I want it to be as authentic as possible. Abyss is one of my biggest influences, [he] is one of my favorite professional wrestlers of all time. Getting a chance to hopefully make a guy like that proud,” Callihan added, “and getting to extend his legacy with matches like that, is something I always strive to do.”
Asked if he wanted to bring any other matches back from IMPACT’s past, Callihan had one in mind.
“I think at this point, as far as hardcore elements go, I think I’ve possibly been one of the only guys of the current crop of people that’s done every single one of IMPACT Wrestling’s legitimate, marquee matches, except for maybe King of the Mountain. We haven’t had a men’s King of the Mountain in I don’t know how long,” Callihan said. “That’s another one I’d love to do just to add to my resume my body of work going forward.”
IMPACT Wrestling hosted a Queen Of The Mountain match at Slammiversary in June, but the company hasn’t had a men’s match since the May 3, 2016 episode of IMPACT’s television show. Prior to that, the last KOTM match on pay-per-view took place at Slammiversary 2015.
