Rey Mysterio is starting to look at life after wrestling.
During an appearance on “Ariel Helwani Meets“, Rey Mysterio spoke about his health as he approaches his 20th anniversary in WWE.
“It’s crazy. I’m surprised sometimes at how good I feel, just overall with all the beatings that I’ve taken, the amount of surgeries that I’ve had. It’s a little over 12 surgeries on my left knee,” Mysterio said. “Right one, knock on wood, is good.”
Mysterio said that it’s the same issue in the knee, then detailed some of the other injuries he dealt with over the years.
“Yes. ACL. Between scopes and cleaning it, and a stretched MCL/PCL, a little bit over 12 surgeries. Torn bicep, one surgery. Torn bicep here, my experience with this one after I had the surgery was bad. They had to go back in there and cut me open two more times, so three. So when I tore this one, I was like I’m not getting it done, I don’t want to go through the same issue. The doctor for some reason said if you have great range of motion, there’s no reason why you should get the surgery if you feel good. I never had it, and this arm feels much better than this one that was repaired. Back, knock on wood, I’m good. My back has taken a lot of the toll, especially being my size, getting slammed by all these dudes, I’ve taken a beating. But for some reason, god is good with me and has taken care of my back and my neck. It’s just my knee that’s been the biggest issue throughout my career.”
Mysterio, now 47, said that he’s not sure he wants to wrestle past 50 years old. He said that a wrestler’s life is not exactly planned out, but now that he sees his son in the business he can at least give himself a better timeframe to retire.
“It’s funny because they don’t prep you up like they do now for NFL players, like save your money and do good. But with wrestling, I’ve always heard from others that they just go until they can’t go anymore. There’s really no start and end date. You just run through it until you can’t or until you decide to step away and do something else. For me, I’ve never had an end date planned. It’s always been, ‘I’m just gonna keep going.’ Now that I’m getting closer to my 50s and I see my son wrestling, I do tell myself okay I wanna go three more years, I don’t wanna go past 50. But then I remind myself, but if you feel good, can you still go another year? Eh. But I think as of right now, my date has always been don’t go over 50.”
Asked if he thinks it will be easy to stop wrestling, Mysterio believes he’ll just be content being there to help Dominik in his own career.
“I think now at this point, it probably will be just because I can see my son grow, and that almost gives me a second life of I’m seeing myself through him. So it’s special to be able to see my son step in there, and to have been given this opportunity with such short amount of time and he had to be prepped up, I feel like he’s taken advantage of the opportunity. Still has a lot to learn, but I’m gonna be content with just being behind the scenes helping him out [and] grow, and I think I can see myself do that.”
