Shayna Baszler feels she’s carrying the torch for catch wrestlers.
Former NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler is not just a professional wrestler in the WWE, she’s also a certified catch wrestler. Trained by former UFC fighter Josh Barnett and Billy Robinson, Baszler mastered the art of catch wrestling amidst her MMA training. Catch wrestling teaches participants how to apply force to obtain a submission hold. In appearing with Dr. Beau Hightower, Shayna Baszler explained why she loves the art of catch wrestling.
“I love catch wrestling because I feel like there’s a whole, with the advent of the UFC and its rule set and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, there are a whole branches of submission holds that are available simply because the person is avoiding being on their back because the pinfall was a way to lose. So those submissions are kind of getting lost because Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is fine to be on your back. Even in the UFC it’s not ideal, but it’s not the end of the world to be on your back.”
Baszler went on to state her hopes of keeping the art alive.
“I really feel like because I trained with Billy [Robinson] and Josh [Barnett]with these guys, it’s like a responsibility I have to keep that alive.”
Shayna Baszler most recently appeared in a six woman Money in the Bank qualifying match on RAW this past Monday. She currently works on the blue brand on Smackdown, most recently aligned with Natalya.
