NJPW President Takami Ohbari Wants To Hold A Forbidden Door Event In Japan

AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door can already be considered a success, given the way tickets for the show sold rapidly and AEW president Tony Khan expressed his satisfaction with the early estimates of the buys during the post-show scrum. Now, fans are already thinking about the sequel, and NJPW President Takami Ohbari wants to see Japan host the event at some point.

In an interview with Tokyo Sports, Ohbari noted that some wrestlers weren’t able to travel to the United States for the pay-per-view this time around, so there are still some matches that have been left on the table. He stated that having Forbidden Door in Japan would be beneficial for a number of reasons, and he noted that the 50th anniversary year of 2022 would be a good occasion to do so.

“In my opinion, there are some wrestlers who were unable to come (to the U.S.) at the last minute. There are still wrestlers and matches I would like to see. I would like to see a continuation of this event,” Ohbari said. “I think there is a need to see this event in Japan. The 50th anniversary year is a good opportunity to make it happen. I think there are some (AEW wrestlers) who would like to compete in front of Japanese fans.”

During the post-show media scrum, Khan made it clear that he was pleased with the inaugural AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door event, and he noted that he believes future crossover events are a possibility.

“That was a real cool night, and a lot of things came together unexpectedly, but I’m real happy with how it all came together,” said Khan. “I’m very grateful to New Japan for working with us, and it’s been a great partnership, and I think we can do it many times over.”
