Moose knows first-hand that wrestlers can become bigger draws even if they don’t have a match each week.
During a recent interview with WrestleZone, Moose spoke about the value in a company’s champion showing up on weekly TV each and every week, despite not working a match each time. Previously, Moose made a comment on the Talk ‘N Shop podcast about how he found more success by not wrestling, joking that it broke his heart when he had to step back into the ring.
While his initial remark was clearly in jest, Moose did speak about why it’s still important for a champion to be on television.
“Yeah, I mean I remember when I made that statement, a bunch of people took it the wrong way and obviously that’s how this era is, people, especially some fans are never gonna like everything you say. But the way I meant that statement, I still think not wrestling, it still breaks my heart to wrestle every time I go on TV because not wrestling makes you more of a star and it makes it that when you wrestle, people show up for it. You look at a guy like The Undertaker, who for the last two years of his career, he only wrestled at WrestleMania and every time WrestleMania came up, he was more like a star because you had to wait a whole year for him to wrestle.”
Moose added that he’s making a point when he brings up names like Brock Lesnar, because he is another athlete that doesn’t wrestle each week, but gets fans to tune in when he does.
“Brock Lesnar doesn’t wrestle every Monday night or every Friday night or whenever the shows are but when he does wrestle, you’re tuning in because you don’t the next time when you’re gonna see him wrestle. I think that’s how it was with me during my run, even before my run, I don’t wrestle that much on TV, I wrestle if it’s an app special or a pay-per-view, you tune in because you don’t know when you’re gonna see me wrestle because I don’t wrestle much.
“I think that helped me become the bigger star that I am today because how much they limit my physicality or wrestling during the TV shows and they try to make it a big deal when I do go out there and perform, I think that right there, in general, that’s how you build a superstar and I think IMPACT Wrestling has done a good job of doing that with myself. Obviously you can’t do that with everyone or you wouldn’t have a show but I think some guys, you can do that with them and I’m happy that I’m one of the guys that they decided to do that with.”
