Paige VanZant will officially make her AEW in-ring debut at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view, and AEW TNT Champion Scorpio Sky is confident that she’ll successfully transition from MMA to professional wrestling.
VanZant, a former UFC fighter, signed with AEW in March, though she made a few appearances on AEW TV before that. In recent months, she has been part of Sky’s feud with Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti, and on Sunday, the two sides will collide in a mixed tag team bout. Sky, VanZant, and Ethan Page will face Guevara, Conti, and Frankie Kazarian.
During an appearance on Sirius XM’s Throwing Down w/ Renee & Miesha, Sky discussed working with VanZant and noted that she’s quickly picking up on the business. He described how she already brings personality and star power to the table, so she just needs to learn the in-ring aspect in order to thrive in the wrestling world.
“Paige, she’s so new but she’s picking up on it so fast,” said Sky. “From the very beginning, when she came a few times with Austin and Dan [Lambert] and the others, I kinda watched some of the things and more so the mannerisms and paying attention to the crowd and that sort of thing that she was just naturally doing. I was adamant, I kept pushing to Dan, I was like, ‘You gotta get her here. She’s good, she can do this. I think she’s gonna pick up on it really quickly.’
“And from what I heard, she is. She’s training with Gangrel, who’s fantastic. But you can’t teach personality, you can’t teach charisma, you can’t teach star power and that’s something that she already brings to the table, and she’s an incredible athlete, a badass, and I think she’ll pick up on the wrestling part very quickly and it’s gonna be great for AEW, we’ve got another star.”
