Report: NJPW’s Tetsuya Naito To Have Eye Surgery

New Japan Pro-Wrestling star Tetsuya Naito is set to have eye surgery, according to a new report.

Tokyo Sports has reported that Naito will have a procedure that will repair superior oblique muscle paralysis in his right eye. The condition has been causing him to have double vision. Naito previously had a similar surgery; it sidelined him for 20 days in 2019.

The article from Tokyo Sports quotes Naito, who says his eye is worse off now than in 2019. He also noted that the Best of Super Juniors tournament gave him a fitting chance to take time off.

The AEW/NJPW supershow, Forbidden Door, is on June 26. If Naito’s recovery follows a similar timeline as his previous procedure, he should be cleared in time for the pay-per-view.

Naito is a three-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion and a six-time IWGP Intercontinental Champion. He last wrestled at NJPW Wrestling Dontaku on May 1, where he unsuccessfully challenged Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

WrestleZone will provide more details as they become available.

H/t to The Wrestling Observer for translating the Tokyo Sports article.
