The XFL is potentially in some hot water over its new logo and branding.
The XFL revealed a new logo and branding package on April 6, but a media group called Togethxr claims the football league’s visual identity is too close to its own. Togethxr was founded by Olympians Sue Bird, Chloe Kim, Simone Manuel and Alex Morgan, and the group has revealed they issued a legal notice to the XFL to “continue to protect the important work” that they’re doing.
From Togethxr:
“Too often the work & creativity of women is overlooked & undervalued.
Diversity & equality are the norm around here. We’re thrilled to see the XFL embrace inclusivity but this rebrand ain’t it. We’ve issued a legal notice & will continue to protect the important work we’re doing.”
Among the perceived similarities, the XFL and Togethxr both prominently feature an “X” with a split down the middle in their respective wordmarks, and both leagues had similar copy in advertising materials. Togethxr’s Sue Bird (WNBA) and her fiancé (Olympic soccer star Megan Rapinoe), as well as Morgan (US soccer), and Manuel (swimming) have publicly commented on the issue, calling for the football league to rebrand before further action is taken.
The XFL is scheduled to kick off its next season, the first under the ownership of The Rock, Dany Garcia and Redbird Capital, in early January of 2023. Wrestlezone will continue to provide any and all updates to the situation.
