Adam Scherr says he’s proud of what being ‘Braun Strowman’ has given him and continues to do so.
Scherr was a guest on The Mack Mania podcast and was asked about being tasked with needing to change his name after establishing himself as Braun Strowman in WWE. After co-host Jack Farmer used WALTER / Gunther as a recent example of fans still referring to a performer’s previous name, Scherr said that he’s proud to still have people call him his former name because it opened doors for him and gave him a life he’s proud of.
“Ninety-nine point nine percent of the time, I’m always proud when fans, a kid comes up and says ‘Braun’ because I put every ounce of being into that character. My blood, sweat, tears, hopes, anxiety, everything I had, that’s just the performer I am. Any walk of life in any sport I’ve tried to partake in, I wanted to be the best that I’d drive myself insane. So, still carrying on that legacy — because in my opinion, Braun Strowman is going to last forever. The stuff we did with him in the six years I did in WWE, they’re going to replay it forever. You look at the past decade, I have more views on any stuff on YouTube than anyone else has, so it’s still an honor.
“Like I’ve said, there’s no bad blood between myself and WWE. Did it end how I wanted it to? Of course not, but that company gave me an opportunity and an avenue of life that I could have never imagined having. Now it’s set me up where I’m literally starting my own wrestling promotion and this is crazy, so I’ll never have a bad word ever come out of my mouth towards that company because they made me who I am and gave me the opportunity to go out and continue to shine a light on the world that I want to get out there and do it.
“Now, sometimes the negative side of that for me is the ‘dirt sheets’ or the wrestling journalists that want to use ‘Braun’ for clickbait when it’s really something about Adam that Adam was doing. That’s the only time I don’t like it because it comes off as disrespectful,” Scherr said. “They’re trying to monetize it because Braun has more views than Adam does, so they’re trying to use it as clickbait and spinning these articles around and they’re getting the views, the hits and the money off of them. That’s the only time I don’t like it.”
Scherr closed by saying that he could see why fans are still attached to WALTER’s name, noting that old habits are hard to break, but he feels like he’s doing his job as long as fans are making noise. “I don’t care what you call me,” Scherr quipped, “just don’t call me late for dinner.” [laughs]
