Goldberg Has To Be Realistic, Learn From The Past To Beat Roman Reigns: I Can’t Headbutt A Door And Knock Myself Out

Goldberg knows that life’s all about learning from your mistakes.

WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg recently appeared on After The Bell with Corey Graves and admitted that he’s made some mistakes in the past and if he expects to defeat Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber, he can’t repeat them.

Fans may remember that Goldberg used to psych himself by headbutting a door on the way out of the locker room, but it ended up causing problems in recent years. “Da Man” accidentally busted himself open during a 2017 appearance on RAW, and later knocked himself out on the way to the ring against The Undertaker at Super Showdown in 2019.

Roman Reigns has made fun of Goldberg for the practice in the past, but now he says that he’ll need to learn from that and adapt if he hopes to win his next match.

“I didn’t get the lead time that I got heading into the [Bobby] Lashley match and I was kind of behind the eight ball when I got the phone call but those are nothing but excuses,” admitted Goldberg. “Right now, I have to use my time wisely and it’s only 24-hours before we go head-to-head and I just have to pray that my preparations both physically and mentally have been enough. I quite obviously train a lot different than I used to, I don’t do my Muay-Thai training anymore because I don’t wanna hurt myself trying to hurt other people and it’s just a different time in my life and I’m not lifting 500-pounds every single day, ya know, I’m repping out 225s as many times as I can and my joints aren’t the same as they used to be but right here [points to head] is the same.

“So, you rely on the past and hopefully I can bring it into the present. The training or your inability to do what you used to do, affects you mentally and you’ve got to overcome that. Right now, I’ll be perfectly honest with you, my number one job is to be there as a role-model for my son. I try to continue to do the things that I’ve done in the past so that he can see how to go about obstacles. I’ve been thrown a number of obstacles throughout my life and in real-time, I can show him how to deal with them… hopefully. I’m really trying to find the ability to do that [mental preparation] and it takes confidence to do that.

“Ya know, I don’t look in mirrors, I try not to look at the internet and I try to put myself back into the mindset that I had before every Football game. I try to use positive imagery, I spend a lot of time alone and I just have to be able to turn into that Godzilla-like, monstrous beast that I once was and if I can do that for a short period of time, it’ll be enough but it’s about maintaining that level of comfort you have with yourself and your position and what’s asked of you. Mentally, I think that I’m there…and physically? We’ll see. I have to be realistic, like, I can’t be head-butting things and knocking myself out, so you learn from your past mistakes and hope it’s enough to bring to the table and to defeat a dominate champion like Roman Reigns.”

Goldberg is set to challenge Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship at Elimination Chamber on 2/19 LIVE from Saudi Arabia.
