Beth Phoenix isn’t ruling out wrestling again after WWE Royal Rumble.
The WWE Hall of Famer will be back in action at the premium live event; she’ll team up with her husband, Edge to face The Miz and Maryse. Many fans have been hoping that the former WWE Women’s Champion will extend her stay and wrestle a few more matches after WWE Royal Rumble. At this point, it’s been difficult to tell whether her bout on Saturday is a one-off or the first in-ring chapter of her return.
In an interview with Muscle & Fitness, Phoenix described how she aims to keep her options open because she’s healthy, so she’s able to compete. That being said, she doesn’t know what the future holds, but if her match at WWE Royal Rumble is her last, it’s a fitting “fairy tale” ending.
“I never close any doors in wrestling, because I don’t want to be called out as a hypocrite later when it’s like ‘you’ve retired, like, five times!’” said Phoenix. “So, I feel great, I don’t have any injuries that prevent me from wrestling, I don’t know what the future brings but I do know that this moment … all I can worry about is this moment in time, and if this is my last match, what a way to go out than beside my husband, in front of my kids, you know, in a stadium, and the Royal Rumble is my favorite pay-per-view so it’s got a fairy tale written all over it.”
Phoenix also named her children, who will be watching her wrestle live for the first time on Saturday, as an important factor in her desire to stay active in the ring.
“Our kids are now of an age, they are 5 and 8, so they can appreciate and understand more of Mom and Dad’s careers,” said Phoenix. “This will be their first experience at a wrestling show.”
For all these reasons, it’s safe to say Phoenix will hope to emerge victorious at WWE Royal Rumble, no matter what happens next.
