Doudrop recently earned the right to challenge Becky Lynch for the WWE RAW Women’s Championship at WWE Royal Rumble. This bout will present Doudrop with the opportunity to win her first championship as a WWE Superstar, but the bout also carries plenty of personal significance for the former Piper Niven.
In an interview with Alex McCarthy of talkSPORT, the Scottish star described how this looming clash with “Big Time Becks” is 15 years in the making, as it ties back to her early days as a trainee. She noted that the wrestling scene in the United Kingdom featured few top-level women, but one competitor, a young Rebecca Knox, stood apart from the rest.
“I don’t know if people know this, but I’ve been waiting 15 years for this match,” said Doudrop. “Way back when I first started training in a little warehouse in Linwood, Scotland, there really wasn’t many experienced girls in the UK wrestling scene at all.
“There was me, Nikki Storm – who had also just started out – down in England we had Mischief and Erin Angel and then over in Ireland we had Miss Rebecca Knox.”
Years before she became “The Man”, Knox was an impressive wrestler in the United Kingdom, and at the time, Doudrop viewed the future WWE megastar as the kind of performer she could have learned a lot from. But the timing didn’t pan out, as Lynch moved to the United States before Doudrop had the opportunity to face her. As a result, the latter has been waiting for more than a decade to compete against “Big Time Becks.”
“We were very aware of Becky at the time,” said Doudrop. “Even back then she was at the top of her game. She was the girl our trainers were trying to get in and have matches with us so we could learn from her, get some kind of experience. But, sadly, unbeknownst to us at the time, she was just packing up things there to move over to the U.S. We made efforts to get her over but it just didn’t work out.”
“So 15 long years later, here we are. It’s one big ass circle to go in, but we got there [laughs].”
Clearly, the upcoming encounter between the two stars will be extra special to Doudrop, and fans won’t have to wait too long to see what happens when the moment arrives; WWE Royal Rumble is on January 29.
