AJ Francis says what’s old is new again, and NXT 2.0 should feel very familiar to some fans.
Former WWE star AJ Francis (FKA Top Dolla) recently appeared on the Ringsiders Wrestling Podcast and would delve into why he ‘loves’ NXT 2.0, which he credits to the fact that it’s similar to the wrestling that he grew up on.
“Yeah, I love NXT 2.0 because people think that because the older version of NXT was very wrestle-centric, right? There’s more than enough other things to watch if that’s what you’re tuning in to watch. There’s more than enough of those and they put on great matches. If that’s what you’re in it for, there’s enough of those, but NXT 2.0 is heavy character-centric which is the wrestling I grew up on.
“Some of the most ridiculous characters were my favorite characters, like The Godfather,” Francis said. “That’s the wrestling I grew up on, so to pretend that I don’t like that would be unauthentic. Now, I can understand why someone who loved the old version of NXT, for what it was, as in the ‘wrestling show,’ wouldn’t like NXT 2.0 because that’s not what it is anymore. But if you don’t bite into an apple expecting to bite an orange, you’re not surprised when it’s an apple.”
Francis, alongside Hit Row stablemates Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott and Ashante Thee Adonis were released from WWE on November 18 while B-Fab was released by the company two weeks prior on November 4. Francis’ no-compete clause will be up on February 2, and has been releasing music in the meantime to chronicle his next move in the wrestling business. More recently, he revealed that he’d been working with former Hit Row stablemate Swerve Scott on a new music video and squashed the rumor the two had heat with each other.
