At the pay-per-view, Gresham defeated Jay Lethal to win the original ROH World Championship. “The Octopus” was originally set to challenge the reigning champion, Bandido at the show, but the latter was pulled from the card when he tested positive for COVID-19. Lethal replaced Bandido, and Gresham emerged victorious. Since then, Gresham has been defending the title for multiple promotions, including Game Changer Wrestling. He’s set to put the title on the line at IMPACT Hard To Kill and at two GCW shows, including the sold-out event at the Hammerstein Ballroom, this month. In Ross Sapp’s tweet, he noted that ROH approvses his title defenses, and the two sides still have a good relationship.
Gresham is a former ROH Pure Champion and ROH World Tag Team Champion; even before he won the world title, he was widely viewed as the face of the company. Like many ROH stars, his contract expired at the end of 2021, and the company is going on hiatus for the first quarter of 2022 while it “reimagines” itself.
