Killer Kross and Scarlett Bourdeaux reflect on their final months in WWE.
Killer Kross and Scarlett Bourdeaux recently appeared on Oral Sessions with Renee Paquette and discussed their WWE tenures, which ended on November 4. The couple talked about getting the call that they were future endeavored and Kross spoke about feeling like he knew something like that would happen early on in his call-up to RAW.
Scarlett: “[I] got the call, [and reacted] ‘Are you f-ckin serious?’ He got the call [second] and said thank God, thank God it’s not just you. It’s both of us at least.”
Kross: “It was unusual, but to be honest with you, I felt like it was coming. I feel like the situation could have been recovered, the presentation on the main roster, you know what I mean? I feel like it could have been recovered, it’s fiction, the possibilities are endless. But I had a weird feeling on that night, just on the debut, I was kinda like feeling that this was the direction it’s going in. It was like a sense of disappointment, but also a sense of relief as well, because as an artist—imagine if you were a comedian, for anyone that’s listening that’s maybe not a big wrestling fan—right as you go on stage they drop your name in front of the crowd, the person that owns the nightclub is like, ‘Hey, you can’t use your best jokes, by the way. Go knock it out of the park.’ And it’s like… what?!!?”
Scarlett: “And for weeks, he was actually saying that he just had a feeling. I was just like, ‘Oh, there’s no way.’ And I wasn’t even medically cleared yet. I was having matches before RAW and SmackDown because they wanted me to wrestle. And after the second match, everything was going great, I get home that night and I looked in the mirror [at her breasts] and said ‘One of these doesn’t look like the other.’ So the next day was NXT and I immediately went to medical and I’m like, ‘I’m not sure if I’m crazy, I’m sure if it always looked like this.’ Like maybe I’m just tired, and with the adrenaline from wrestling, sometimes you don’t even notice some things all of the time, so you don’t even think anything of it. I went to medical and they’re like, ‘One of your boobs is totally gone.’ But I was like OK, I can get the surgery and then I can manage [while I recover] to be ringside, that’s no problem, I just can’t wrestle right away. But I guess the plan was for me to wrestle, so they’re like ‘When you’re totally cleared, we’re going to have you wrestle.’ So they scrapped all of the managing stuff at that point, and I was sitting at home for those last four months just waiting.”
Kross then detailed his promotion to the RAW roster, which included a polarizing new look in addition to losing Scarlett as his manager. Kross said that what was originally supposed to be a 10-minute match was cut down to 90 seconds, which was a loss to Jeff Hardy while he was still NXT Champion. He went through with it, but went back to NXT [where he was still serving as NXT Champion] and shared his concerns with how he looked on RAW.
“I went back to NXT the next day, I spoke with someone there and I just said, ‘Look, my biggest fear, my biggest phobia is that there’s a hole being dug for me, and I’m nervous that if I’m not permitted to crawl out of it myself and people absolve themselves of the creative situation, I’m not going to be [seen as] a return of the investment, I’m going to get fired. So what do you think I should do right now? Because part of this business is doing what you’re told. My intuition was telling me that everything was off, everything was wrong and I felt something bad coming like four months before it happened. But everyone that I would talk to was like, ‘Oh no, everybody loves you, this is good. You have no problems…’ yada yada yada, but I felt it coming. I tried to as professionally and politely as a could talk to people in the chain of command and tried to be a good sport about everything.”
Paquette asked why they changed Kross’ character so dramatically despite him finding success with Scarlett in NXT, and he said it started with an email and he initially laughed at the new ‘gladiator’ look he was given, but he went along with it because he didn’t want to be perceived as a difficult talent to work with. Kross added that he said he could be comfortable with the gimmick, but knew it wasn’t going to get over and said still thought he owed it to WWE to try and make it work.
Kross previously spoke about the creative briefing he received about his new RAW attire and said he believed it was the result of a group effort to evolve his character and make it more like a gladiator. After his release from the company on November 4, one fan who wondered if Kross would be willing to give him the helmet that he wore to the ring on RAW. Kross replied in hilarious fashion and said “nobody wants that piece of sh-t brother.”
